Smartphone adoption by physicians expected at 81% by 2012

81% of US physicians will have smartphones by 2012--up 16 points from 2009--and half of this group will use their devices for administrative functions, continuing education and patient care.  Adoption is driven by physician-oriented apps and content--and is also moving past hospital staff to smaller private practices and into iPhones and Androids from BlackBerry.  The findings are based on a Manhattan Research study of 1900 physicians one year ago--what seems an age ago.  But the author touts it as an opportunity for healthcare marketers--handle with care!   FierceMobileHealthcare.  [Editor's note--not noted, but I believe a factor--screen resolution and clarity have also improved markedly, a major factor when 1/3 of physicians are over age 55.
