81% of US physicians will have smartphones by 2012--up 16 points from 2009--and half of this group will use their devices for administrative functions, continuing education and patient care. Adoption is driven by physician-oriented apps and content--and is also moving past hospital staff to smaller private practices and into iPhones and Androids from BlackBerry. The findings are based on a Manhattan Research study of 1900 physicians one year ago--what seems an age ago. But the author touts it as an opportunity for healthcare marketers--handle with care!
