Dr Adam Heller honoured

Dr Adam Heller of the University of Texas, Austin who created the technology that led to the development of Abbott’s blood glucose monitoring systems has been awarded the US’s 2007 National Medal of Technology and Innovation. Heller developed revolutionary approaches to glucose measurement that convert biochemical concentrations to electrical signals, a key component in the technology of remote monitoring of blood glucose levels. The National Medal of Technology is the highest honor awarded by the
President of the United States to America’s leading innovators. The medal is given annually to individuals, teams, and/or companies for their outstanding contributions to economic, environmental and social well-being through the development and commercialization of technology products, processes and concepts. eHealth Planning and Management Symposium 2008 (Denmark)

One-day WoHIT 2008 pre-conference symposium on 3 November in Copenhagen snappily sub-titled, as is the way of EU conferences, ‘Change management for introducing clinical process orientation and archetypes across the community’. However, the three speakers, Angelo Rossi-Mori, CNR-ITB (Italy), Karl A. Stroetmann, empirica (Germany), and Karl-Henrik Lundell, SALAR (Sweden) look as though they have some interesting content to offer people trying to create national strategies for deploying ehealh developments. Continua Alliance member Matsushita Electric Industrial Co is rebranding as Panasonic Corp. The 90-year-old company markets under three brands - Matsushita, National and Panasonic. Alert Limited lays down a challenge (UK)

Alert, a relatively small newcomer in the UK’s personal safety market is, with the introduction of two new alarm services, throwing down a challenge to councils and the established community alarm companies. Until now its offerings have been in the area of personal and lone worker safety (service overview here) but the two new services it is offering to the public, Phone4 Safe-T and Checking Safe-T are also being offered to councils with prices starting from £120 per person per year based on 50 users for a pilot scheme.

Good vibrations may help reduce falls

Not telecare directly, but its about technology in relation to an important issue for telecare services.

Less than ten minutes standing on a vibrating platform several times a week could help reduce older people’s risk of falls, Australian researchers have found. (But it has to be at the ‘right’ speed.)
