They like robots in Japan and are working hard to turn them into human replacement care givers. RI-MAN, developed by Riken BMC, can ’see’, ‘hear’ ‘touch’ and ’smell’ and can lift and carry a person - well, mannequin in the demo. Telecare that uses video monitoring will need automated systems to identify when someone has fallen. This video from Baltimore University shows how that may be possible with this automated gait analysis developed to aid security monitoring of CCTV surveillance images. Intel’s World Ahead Program

Insight into Intel’s ambition to connect the next 1 billion new users to the internet. It shows some examples where the ‘revolution’ is underway in Egypt and Brazil. Not a telehealth video directly, but a pointer to the future. After that, find a spare 40 minutes and watch the video on Intel’s website of Paul Otellini announcing the program. It’s thought provoking stuff.

‘Must see’ video on aspects of telecare by GBTV’s LocalGov TV (not to be confused with the LGA’s Local Government Channel on www.localgovtv.com). It’s particularly good to see the terminology issues tackled.
Viewing hints:
1) To view it via internet you will need to provide your contact details to this commercial company. The quid pro for viewing the video is that you will receive marketing material. It is available to buy on DVD, but the price isn’t revealed on the site.
2) With up to 1 Meg broadband,you will have a better viewing experience using the low bandwith viewing option, but will have longer to wait for the video to load.

This addition to the video library should give ammunition to all who are looking for substantial investment in telecare, along the lines that London Borough of Newham intends. The video itself shows how Westminster invested many millions in wireless CCT systems to help keep its citizens and visitors safe on the streets. How about a similar spend to keep them safe in their homes? You need to be flash enabled and turn your sound on - and you may need to be patient while it loads.

Made for Brunel University’s Telemedicine & eHealth Systems course, this video shows the extensive use of telemedicine equipment at Chorleywood Health Centre, Hertfordshire, UK. One of the best telemedicine videos around, doctors, other staff, patients and hospital consultants discuss the benefits to each of them.

Reinventing the ambulance, this amazing vehicle carries state-of-the-art teledicine diagnostics over the roughest terrain. Preparation for the Great Californian Disaster maybe? The Loma Linda University Medical Center which produced this vehicle, and the video, is a Seventh-Day Adventists’ healthcare institution.
